Betty Kazumura

After graduating from Franklin, Betty became involved in various pursuits and adventures. She attended two quarters at the UW (studying Calculus, Biology and Psychology) then decided to pursue insurance. She worked for the Hartford Insurance Company for a few years. Then the college bug drew her to Seattle Central Community College for two years. She graduated with an AA degree in general studies but her main focus was human anatomy/physiology and psychology/sociology. Next, the travel bug and lure for adventure enticed her away to Holland America Cruise Lines. She enjoyed interacting with the group tour agents and traveling on cruises to Alaska, the Eastern Caribbean and Mexico.

Betty then added co-owner and operator of a snack vending machine business as well as her full-time job at Holland America. Betty related that it was “a bit crazy” but she kept both going for four years before making the switch to working solely at the vending company for the last year.

Betty then worked Five years at Olympic Medical Corp and then seven in customer service/sales at Arrow Electronics – the Boeing in-plant Store. During that time, Betty attended City University and completed her bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Administration. Then, due to a Boeing downturn, she was laid off, which in Betty’s opinion turned out to be “a godsend.” Her new degree helped land her next and current assignment in 2005 (11 years and going strong!) at World Vision, Inc., a non-profit Christian humanitarian and emergency relief organization. “It’s exciting to know that World Vision is the largest provider of clean water systems in the world!”, said Betty. “They are best known for their global child sponsorships and emergency relief aid.” Betty uses her passion and mission to serve and help transform lives in her work at World Vision.

In 2014, Betty became a board member of an organization called Friends of WPC Nepal. Through this organization, she became involved with helping transform the lives of women and children rescued from human trafficking and sexual abuse. In June of 2015, Betty travelled to Hetauda, Nepal shortly after the massive April 2015 earthquake. Her humanitarian efforts there became two-fold. Besides her work with the Women’s Protection Center, she also lent a hand by helping Nepal rebuild after the earthquake.
