Back in the Day

Do you remember when?

  • I remember when they first put in the pedestrian overpass which still extends across both Rainier Ave So and MLK Blvd (back then it was Empire Way).

  • We were spoiled to have a Dag's and a Herfy's nearby. The McDonald's is still in the same loction at Rainier and 25th but the building has gone through many changes throughout the years.

  • Anyone remember the Chuckwagon Buffet on McClellan?

  • The Tradewell store is long gone, replaced by a QFC store.

  • Big 5 Sporting Goods is an O'Reilly Auto Supply.

  • The large building that replaced Sick's Stadium houses a Lowe's Hardware store. There has been talk of taking that down and building a large retail/living complex.

  • Pepsi is still in the same location.

  • Cruising along the lake, or around the Renton Loop on a Friday or Saturday night. The Taco Time is still located in the same lot, but they put up a new building several years ago.

  • The Rainier Beach Vince's Italian Restaraunt closed down. Everyone has to go to either the Renton Highlands, Burien or Federal Way locations for a great pizza and pasta fix.

The Franklin Alumni Association & Foundation (FAA&F) purchased a new billboard sign for the Rainier Ave South & MLK Blvd (formerly Empire Way) intersection. Your membership in the FAA&F helps to fund improvemtents, much needed equipment and student scholarship awards each year. If you are a member of the FAA&F, thank you! If you aren't and would like to become a member, please visit the FAA&F web site and Join or Donate to FAA&F. Two newsletters each year (Spring and Fall) help keep use up to date on what is happening at the school, reunion news and photos and much more.

The H-Salt Esquire Fish & Chips building is now occupied by a Philly Cheesesteak restaraunt. The Link Light Rail station is behind that with trains going downtown and to SeaTac Airport and soon to Husky Stadium. A multi-use apartment and business structure can be seen in the center and just to the right of the Light Rail Station and a Starbucks (one of many in the area) is at right.

Pay-N-Save and Tradewell have been replaced by RiteAid and QFC but most of the old Tradewell sign is still in use.

Even though the McDonald's has been remodeled several times, it is still at the corner lot of Rainier Ave So & South 25 Street, next to the Pepsi Bottleing Company.

Borrichinni's Bakery (aka Ginger Bell Bakery before that) is still in business at the same location and still has some of the best cakes in town.

Across the street from Borrichinni's Bakery is Taco Time. The spot between Columbia City and Hillman City closed down years ago.
